Experiment and Theory

@SPIRAL2

A large-scale project related to nuclear structure and dynamics like SPIRAL2 requires a large-scale theoretical support. As underlined in the recent evaluation (January 2010) by the SPIRAL2 Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the theoretical activities related to SPIRAL2:

«The SAC suggests that a possible approach to theory at SPIRAL2 is to strengthen the already existing theory group at GANIL with additional post-doctoral and doctoral student positions, and to coordinate the theory activities in the physics of SPIRAL2 with those already existing both at the National (Orsay, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, …) and International (GSI-FAIR, Jyväskylä,…) level. The post-doctoral fellows and doctoral students could then move to take up permanent positions at various universities in France and elsewhere in Europe forming the basis for research in the physics of SPIRAL2 in the second part of this decade and beyond. This clearly requires stronger collaborations with universities and a stronger interaction between theorists and experimentalists. Furthermore, it may be advisable to create funds of several hundred thousand Euros that could be matched by the regional authorities. This could be used in project-oriented funding to allow theory groups across France, and possibly internationally, to partake strongly in the physics research objectives of GANIL and to strengthen their efforts in that direction.»

Letters of intent for day-one SPIRAL2 Phase1 experiments have been submitted to and evaluated by the SAC of SPIRAL2 in 2009. Such LoIs would serve to define first beams and necessary equipment for the first experiments in 2012, to be performed with the S3 and NFS facilities.

Following the SAC recommendations and the submitted LoIs a dedicated two-day’s meeting for discussion between theoreticians and experimentalists will be organised on June 24 and June 25 at GANIL at the occasion of the next SAC meeting which will evaluate the updated LoIs for day-one SPIRAL2 Phase1 experiments. Such a meeting should be an occasion for discussion and exchange between theory and experimental groups toward joint efforts for the preparation, future analysis and interpretation of results of the day-one experiments.

The goals of the meeting and the following actions are:
  •  Share with all theoreticians future experimental projects,
  •  Identify the theory group(s) interested by the joint work with experimentalists for each (if possible) LoI,
  •  Identify the necessary improvements and new theoretical developments,
  •  Identify the actions dedicated to improve resources available for theory groups (ANR, EU projects, dedicated requests to CNRS, CEA etc.)
  • Work out jointly the best proposals of future experiments.

A preliminary agenda of the meeting is as follows:

1)    Presentation of the updated LoIs for day-one SPIRAL2 Phase1 experiments (open SAC session). Discussion about the physics cases.

2)    Following the open SAC session: Discussion between theoreticians and experimentalists about a few cases to be studied first (which nuclei, which observables?); definition of benchmarks for calculations.

3)    Discussions about the improvements required to better fulfil the requirements of the experimentalists.

A similar meeting will be organised at the SPIRAL2 Week 2011 (January 24-28, 2011) in order to present and discuss the LoIs for Day-one SPIRAL2 Phase2 experiments (with ISOL radioactive-ion beams) as well as to discuss improvements made on the benchmark calculations.

In order to have the widest panel of theories, all physicists are welcome to participate in this meeting. Please forward this announcement to everybody who may be interested.
Hope to see you joining this project.
