Measurement of double differential neutron spectra induced par interaction of heavy ions on thick targets

In order to maintain a good level of operation conditions for nuclear research accelerator facilities, the double differential neutron spectra (energy, angle) produced by interaction of incident ion on thick targets (Thick Target Neutron Yields (TTNY)) has to be well know. The experimental TTNY data is indeed useful for the radiation protection and the benchmark studies of Monte-Carlo transport codes. However, we are facing to the lack of these data. An experiment campaign being carried out at GANIL with heavy ion beams at different energies ([4 - 95] MeV/A) will allow acquiring a rich experimental TTNY database. This database will be a solid reference for benchmark studies of the nuclear transport and simulation codes (PHITS, FLUKA, MCNP) used at GANIL for many of its projects studies (modeling, optimization, dimensioning…) and widely in the nuclear physics community with the perspective of improving nuclear reaction models in some of these codes.


Two techniques of neutron measurement are used in our work: activation method and time of flight method.


The experimental setup, analysis method and some results will be presented and discussed in this “Physique dans tous ses états”.
