Elementary excitations in the outer core of neutron stars
C. Ducoin (Département de Physique, Université de Catane)
The microscopic excitations which can aect the stellar matter are a necessary
input for the modelization of neutron-star cooling. They are determined by the
strong-interaction properties. I will present a study of the normal density modes in
homogeneous neutron-star matter, at densities where the expected hadronic consti-
tuants are neutrons and protons (until three times saturation density). The calcu-
lations are performed in the RPA framework, and two kinds of nuclear models are
compared: Skyrme-like eective forces, and forces derived from Brueckner-Hartree-
Fock microscopic calculations. I will emphasize the eect of electron screening on
the proton plasmon mode, the role of the nuclear eective mass, and the damping
eects which must be considered to identify the relevant modes.
