Charge breeding of condensable radioactive ion beams for SPIRAL

Thèse en instrumentation nucléaire

Since 2001, the SPIRAL 1 facility at GANIL has been running using a target ion source system (TISS) called NANOGANIII and providing rare gas type of radioactive ion beams to physicists.  The SPIRAL 1 upgrade project aims to expand the radioactive ion beams available for post-acceleration to condensable elements. For that purpose, dedicated TISS based on hot carbon target combined with 1+ ion sources shall be used: FEBIAD, Surface ion source or ECR ion source. The 1+ / n+ technique is then required in order to boost the charge state of the beam for injecting it inside the cyclotron CIME post-accelerator. It is using an ECR source of Phoenix type which has to be optimized to reach high 1+ beam capture efficiency, high charge states and high beam purity.

The PhD will be alloted to:

·       The optimisation by simulation of the 1+ ion capture by the ECR plasma taking into account of the real physics occuring inside the plasma

·       The tests of the whole system within the existing facility: tests of the TISS alone; tests of the charge breeder alone; test of the complete system and production of new radioactive beams for physics experiments.

·       The comparison of the simulation and experimental results.

The PhD student work on charge breeding will be done  within the european network EMILIE which aims to improve the efficiency of the system 1+ / n+ for future ISOL facilities.

The PhD student will additionnaly have the opportunity to participate to physics experiment with the new radioactive beams .
