S3 selected by DOE

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has allocated funding for one project proposal associated with GANIL/SPIRAL2.

This funding announcement acknowledges not only the GANIL advantage in several key areas but also the enthusiasm of U.S. scientists to collaborate with their French counterparts.

The proposal includes:

  1. Collaboration on a new m/q=6 injector to increase heavy ion beam intensities at SPIRAL2 to deliver the world’s highest yields of rare isotopes such as 100Sn. Argonne Group: Peter Ostroumov.
  2. Collaboration on a next-generation recoil mass separator, the Super-separator spectrometer (S3) for research in the 100Sn region as well as for superheavy elements. Argonne group: Jerry Nolen, Bela Erdelyi, Shashikant Manikonda.
  3. Construction and operation of a gas catcher optimized for a 100Sn research program. Argonne group: Guy Savard.
  4. Construction and operation of a highly segmented silicon detector array for spectroscopy in the 100Sn region following S3. Argonne group: Kim Lister, Darek Seweryniak.
