SPIRAL1 - New Beams
The SPIRAL 1 facility is being upgraded allowing the use of new target – ion sources. A number of new beams should be available from the ISOLDE VADIS ion source coupled to graphite targets as of beginning of 2017.
Available beams for the next Program Advisory Committee meeting (June 9th to 10th)
The list of new beams available for experiment proposals for the next GANIL Program Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting is shown in the following list: "Day 1 beams from the SPIRAL upgrade.pdf".
The submission deadline for proposals and letter of intents is April 8th.
The list is an extract of the chart of beams for the following elements: Na, Mg, Al, P, Cl, Ar, K. For these elements, beam intensities have been estimated using
- On-line yield measurements using the FEBIAD source at SPIRAL 1
- Efficiencies of the SPIRAL 1 charge breeder as they were measured with alkali ions during the stable beam commissioning at LPSC.
The former beams available at SPIRAL 1 using the Nanogan source (He, N,O, Ar, Kr) remain available.
If not done during the SPIRAL 1 upgrade workshop (https://indico.in2p3.fr/event/12296/), please contact the persons responsible for the development of the new beams for the preparation of proposals and letter of intents via the following generic email address: email@example.com.
Future beams at SPIRAL 1
It is expected that the list of isotopes available for experiment proposals will be enlarged during 2017 to other elements that should become available using the same target ion source with different primary beams. Such elements include Li, Be, Ca, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ge, As. Longer term developments aiming at increasing the radioactive ion beam intensities and enlarging further the number of available beams include
- a surface ionization source for alkali isotopes
- new fragmentation targets
- fusion - evaporation targets.
Letter of intents for isotopes not included in "Day 1 beams from the SPIRAL upgrade.pdf" will regularly be examined by the PAC in order to guide the ongoing beam R&D.
An extended list of possible future beams, including a number of new primary beams and targets combinations, was circulated for the SPIRAL 1 upgrade workshop held at GANIL from 8th to 10th of February. This latter can be found on the workshop website https://indico.in2p3.fr/event/12296/.
For any question regarding the future beams, and for preparing the letters of intent, please contact the persons responsible for the development of the new beams via the following generic email address: firstname.lastname@example.org.
